Saturday 13th December saw GSB U12 Boys play host to Wollaton Canaries at Sherwood Academy. With the game due to kick off at 1pm, it meant there was time for the frost to clear. However with the centre circle still very hard, Wollaton were not happy to play on the 9-a-side pitch so the game was switched to the adjacent 11-a-side pitch but using the 9-a-side goals on the edge of the 6 yard box. With the U15’s finishing their game on that pitch just before 12:50, the game was going to be played on a very wet and heavy pitch.
GSB kicked the match off and the boys did their very best to play football on a very difficult surface. After 11 minutes of the first half, the boys managed to get themselves in front courtesy of another goal from Asher Huffen, who was playing on the right of midfield today. The goal came after a corner on the left was delivered in by James Abbott and Asher collected the ball before turning and firing the ball home.
The boys were missing two players due to illness which meant Drew Chapman reverted to centre half for the day and after he broke down another attack by Wollaton, he calmly brought the ball forward before delivering a great ball to Jacob Burley. Jacob played the ball onto Elliott Hay, who side stepped past two defenders before firing the ball into the roof of the net.

The second half saw Wollaton come out having swapped keepers and they put in a very determined effort. They pulled a goal back when there left midfielder played a great through ball past Ashton at left back and their stirker ran onto the end and finished very well.
The boys have been in front many times this season and been pegged back. However they continued to play some good football and nearly got a third when Ben Morris was played through but his goal bound shot was saved by the Wollaton keeper with a great reflex save low to his right which he somehow managed to see the ball go over the crossbar (Think Gordon Banks!)
With 10 minutes to go Ben Morris had another shot saved by the Wollaton keeper but James Plant was on hand to poke the ball home from 2 yards to give GSB a much deserved third.
Final Score: GSB 3 Wollaton Canaries 1
Man of the Match: Drew Chapman. Having to cover for the absence Malachi Gregg at centre half for the last two weeks, Drew has looked very comfortable and given the team a much more solid look at the back.
So the winter season finishes with the boys finishing 3rd, one point behind the joint leaders. They are also in the Quarter Finals of the cup so have plenty to play for in their remaining few 9-a-side games.
