Letters to Heaven
Matilda Handy, a young football player for the U10 Bulldogs at Gedling Southbank, has recently gained national recognition for her heartwarming idea to install a post box at Gedling Crematorium. The post box would provide bereaved families with an opportunity to write letters to their loved ones in heaven.
Matilda’s inspiration for the post box came from her personal experience. Her grandmother, who had worked at the post office in Arnold for many years, had passed away in 2017. Matilda’s mother, who currently works at the Crematorium, shared the idea with the owners, and it quickly gained traction.
Matilda’s incredible achievement has not gone unnoticed. She has been featured on several TV shows, including an appearance on “Saturday Night Takeaway” with Ant & Dec, and was invited to 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, who awarded her the 2003rd Points of Life Award. To cap off her memorable day, the Lionesses had visited before her and gifted the Prime Minister some England shirts, one of which he passed on to Matilda. This is a moment she will undoubtedly treasure for years to come.
As a result of Matilda’s innovative idea, the Westerleigh Group is rolling out post boxes at over 40 Crematoriums, and interest has been received from many countries, including as far away as Australia.
