After yesterday’s semi final defeat, GSB U10 Red team travelled to Long Eaton to take part in their annual tournament.
For those with younger age groups, this is an excellent event and gives young boys the opportunity to come out onto the pitch using the tunnel to be greeted by the crowd, something I have found they love over the last 3 years.
The tournament did not start too well for GSB as they drew their first game 0-0 with Toton Tigers Black and they seemed to be suffering from the penalty shoot out loss the day before.
The second group game saw them take on Derwent Rangers. James Abbott gave GSB the lead but this was quickly cancelled out by Derwent.
The final game saw the boys take on Attenborough Colts. Unfortunately they conceded a late goal and lost the game 1-0.
This meant they would go through to the Quarter Final of the Plate competition, where they faced Burton Joyce Green. It seemed at last that the boys were starting to remember how to play football and ran out 4-0 winners with goals from Drew Chapman, Carter Pateman, Ben Morris and James Abbott.
This meant a semi final against Toton Tigers Black. The thought of another semi final going to penalties was not something I was looking forward. However the boys were starting to want to play football now and ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Drew Chapman and Carter Pateman.
So the boys had made the final where they would face Toton Tigers Orange. The game ended 0-0 and we were back to penalties. Haydn McCaughey had decided to move from his usual centre midfield role to goalkeeper after the league games and so here he was having to face penalties.
TTO hit their first penalty against the post and then Drew Chapman scored to put GSB in the lead. TTO scored and Carter Pateman was up to the task as he gave GSB a 2-1 lead. TTO had their penalty saved by Corky who then took his penalty but missed. However he then pulled off a great save again giving GSB a 2-1 lead, which meant if Jake Burley could score GSB would be champions. Jake stepped up confidently and placed the ball in the corner to make GSB U10 Red’s the champions.
Well done to all the players today and a special mention to Kieran Parrott, Ashton Graham and Billy Housden who went to play for GSB U10 White team as they did not have enough players to take part. However as they were meant to be taking part for the Red team they still managed to sneak in and get themselves a trophy at the end.
