GEDLING SOUTHBANK U11 v CALVERTON MINERS WELFARE U11 BLUE
Saturday 14th September saw GSB U11 entertain Calverton MW U11 Blue team at Carlton-Le-Willows. Both teams had drawn their first games 2-2 so a close game was expected.
The weather was excellent with very little wind and the sun breaking through the clouds. The U11’s had a full squad and Elliott Hay made his debut and took on the captains armband for the game to mark the occasion.
GSB quickly got in front when Elliott ‘Els’ Hay played the ball out wide to Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman who put a great cross in for Ben ‘Mozza’ Morris to tap the ball into an empty net.
With their tails up, the U11’s added a second just 20 seconds when James ‘Planty’ Plant played in Mozza, who added his second within the first 4 minutes.
Halfway through the first half, CMW got in behind the GSB defence and McKensie ‘Macca Pacca’ Withers came out of goal but upended the striker and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot. Macca Pacca steadied himself and got his full body behind the shot and made an excellent save. His long kick found Mozza who raced through on goal and after a bit of a scramble, Chappers blasted in GSB’s 3rd goal.
6 minutes before half time, Chappers got on the score sheet again when Billy ‘Howser’ Housden collected a goal kick and played the ball out wide to him. He collected the ball and smashed the shot in off the bar.
2 minutes later and GSB made it five when Ashton ‘ Ash’ Graham played the ball down the line to Chappers, who played a delightful through ball to Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman, who took the ball in his stride and coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net.

The second half saw CMW come out strong and they were providing a match for GSB. However GSB managed to make it 6 when Mozza got his hat trick. Chappers played a lovely through ball which saw Mozza cut across his defender take a touch with his right and then finish with his left. An excellent goal by the team and a great finish for a hat trick.
Calverton MW then got a couple of goals back with one being an excellent chip by their striker.
GSB weren’t finished yet though and Pates came on for the last 15 minutes and when Howser drove forward with the ball he played a delightful ball to Pates who once again showed what a great finisher he is with a lovely side footed finish.
With less than a minute to go on the clock, Els drove forward into the box and after jinking past a couple of players was brought tumbling down to the ground. Els very kindly allowed Pates to take the penalty to try and get his hat trick. Cool as you like, Pates stepped up and slotted the ball into the corner of the goal to claim his hat trick.
Final Score: GSB U11 8 Calverton MW U11 Blue 2
Man of the Match: Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman. Some delightful through balls today for his forwards and a couple of goals himself. However a special mention to all the boys today, who showed in the first half what they can do.
Next week sees the team travel to Attenborough Colts, who played a league higher last season so a tough task awaits the boys.
