The following report was written by Caretaker Manager Adam Stevenson AKA Stevo……and on this report who needs me!!!!
Well Saturday morning again can only mean one thing….It’s football day and luckily our game was still going ahead despite the international break although we did lose our manager for the day due to very important work commitments.
Today we welcomed our opponents from Hucknall who we haven’t played before but I was quite confident if we played how we have recently we would be hard to beat. As we sat in the dressing room after the warm up doing our pre match team talk all I asked of the team was to carry on where we had left off, pass the ball quickly and sharply and most importantly communication.
As we made our way on to the field of play there was still fans coming through the turnstiles with there rattles and scarves waving over there heads, so we knew the atmosphere would be top notch as it always is down at the mill.
The first half got under way and from early on we could see Hucknall liked to pass the ball around and play the game the right way. We started slowly and bunching up and we were very quiet and backing off the opposition. We started to gain a hold of the game and had a succession of corners one of which a chance fell to Luca who had an excellent game again and he crashed a shot against the cross bar, Hucknall managed to get the ball away to safety.
Ashton had one thing to do in the first half and came to our rescue when called into action to thwart Hucknall’s striker half time 0-0.
As we arrived back onto the field of play to a fantastic reception from the thousands of loyal fans who had there half time burgers and borvil to warn themselves up. The message to the players was more talking needed and a bit more belief and we would get the results the management and the die hard fans wanted. We got at Hucknall straight away and Ben saw a shot crash against the post after breaking clear of the Hucknall back line, we were starting to think is it going to be one of those days. But after a break down the right hand side saw Ben lay the ball off to Tom who made no mistake and slotted the ball beyond the keeper 1-0.
We were still pressing hard but had Ashton to thanks on more than one occasion, making a couple of fantastic one on one saves to underline what a great and reliable keeper he is.
We still needed the second goal to give us a cushion to sit back on and it came form a corner as Ben delivered a Beckham like delivery right on Ronnie’s head and he made no mistake and buried it beyond the despairing dive of the keeper 2-0.
We kept pressing and the Hucknall defence they had to make some last ditch tackles to stop the onslaught, one tackle being late on Max giving the Ref no choice but to award a free kick 20 yards from goal. Billy stepped up and curled a beauty into the top corner to seal the game 3-0.
The crowd were clearly enjoying the football on show today and the players had really entertained the Gedling faithful, full time 3-0.
The boys played really well today and I thought all of them went about there jobs professionally, Liam was awarded man of the match another no nonsense display at the back that helped us keep another clean sheet. Only one goal conceded in the last 3 games and 14 scored, well done to the players and a big thank you to the supporters for coming along and showing your support for the lads.
I would like to say a big thank you to Stevo for stepping in and doing a great job, well done boys.
