SOUTHWELL CITY U11 BLADES v GEDLING SOUTHBANK U11
Saturday 29th March saw GSB U11’s travel to Brinkley, Southwell to take on Southwell City Blades. These two last met in November 2012 when GSB came away 3-1 winners in Southwell’s only defeat of their Division 4 campaign.
GSB started off playing some very good football in fairly windy conditions. For the third week in a row they got an early lead when Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman took a free kick from the right which went straight in over the goalkeeper.
GSB were playing some very good football in the first half whilst Southwell struggled to cope with the wind as they kept over hitting the ball straight to McKensie ‘Macca Pacca’ Withers in goal.
Southwell managed to get themselves level midway through the first half when they got a corner which they delivered very well and despite a flick at the near post from Chappers, a player headed them level.
The rest of the half saw GSB play some very good football with James ‘Planty’ Plant having a very good game on the right side of midfield. He beat his man on numerous occasions and from one very good cross Ben ‘Mozza’ Morris hit the post.

After half time, Southwell were playing into the wind which helped them as it was holding the ball up for them.
Once again they scored from a corner. A very good delivery saw the much taller and stronger Blades head themselves in front.
This goal seemed to deflate the boys so much and they seemed to lose a great deal of confidence as they were beaten another 4 times before the final whistle. They did contribute to this by giving the ball away from goal kicks and across the back line.
Hopefully the boys will learn from this match. They definitely did not deserve to lose 6-1 but Southwell showed with bigger and stronger boys who broke through the defensive line very easily and finished most of their chances that sometimes especially at this age size does matter.

Man of the Match: James ‘Planty’ Plant. Whilst James is one of our smallest players, he played extremely well against a big, strong Southwell side. He showed great confidence to beat his full back on numerous occasions and deliver some great crosses.
The boys next league match is back at Brinkley on Thursday 24th April to take on the Sabres, who defeated the Blades 8-1 last week. It will be a very tough game for these boys but hopefully with Malachi and Elliott back they will be strengthened especially in defence.
