WEST BRIDGFORD U11 HURRICANES v GEDLING SOUTHBANK U11
Saturday 5th October saw GSB U11’s travel to Regatta Way to face West Bridgford Hurricanes for a 2:30 kick off – the first time they have kicked off on a Saturday afternoon.
With the top 6 teams all on 7 points, this league is always going to produce some very tight games and today’s score line was certainly one of those occasions.
There was a fairly strong wind blowing across the pitch which we talked about before the game so the boys started to bring into their decision making what the elements are doing.
GSB started very brightly and had numerous chances to put themselves ahead but just couldn’t find a way past a very good West Bridgford goalkeeper. The did manage to find a way past the keeper to take a lead after 22 minutes of the first half and it was probably more through luck than judgement that they did so.
The ball was played out wide to Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman who put another cross into the penalty area. However the cross wasn’t hit in the direction it was probably meant and with a little assistance from the wind, it sailed straight over the keepers head and into the net.

All that was said at half time was carry on doing what you’ve been doing and you’ll get what you deserve.
However the much longer team talk by West Bridgford seemed to have the desired impact for them as they drew level fairly early in the second half. McKensie ‘Macca Pacca’ Withers tried to stop the ball from going behind for a goal kick but inadvertently gave away a corner kick. West Bridgford put another good cross in which GSB failed to deal with and the scores were now level.
GSB started to play football again and took the lead again through Chappers second of the day and eighth of the season so far. Haydn ‘H’ McCaughey won a free kick on the edge of the area and some very quick thinking from him saw him play a delightful through ball to Chappers who slotted the ball home.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, H won another free kick on the edge of the area. Chappers stepped up trying to score his first hat trick but was denied by another good save from the keeper. However Ben ‘Mozza’ Morris was on hand to tap in the rebound to give GSB a 2 goal cushion.
With one minute left on the clock, GSB conceded a second goal. A through ball from West Bridgford saw Malachi ‘Ky’ Gregg try to play the ball out wide but unfortunately it hit the legs of Ashton ‘Ash’ Graham and went straight into the path of a West Bridgford forward, who carried on and finished well.
Not long after the final whistle was blown.

Today saw the boys play some very good football and look very threatening going forward but once again showed a little more work is needed on our defensive side of the game.
Man of the Match: Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman. Each player has 3 individual targets in this team and today they were being marked against these. Chappers got the most marks against his name to go with his two goals and one assist.
With results going GSB’s way in other games they are currently joint top of the league together with next week’s visitors Edwalton Cavaliers. This promises to be another close game. The only downside for GSB is the fact that 6 of the players are going away with their school from Monday to Friday this week so may well come back a little bit tired and drained!
