GEDLING SOUTHBANK U11 v EDWALTON CAVALIERS U11
Saturday 12th October saw 2nd place Edwalton Cavaliers travel to CLW to take on 3rd place Gedling Southbank. After the withdrawl of Attenborough Colts from the league in the week, it left the top 6 teams all level on 7 points so a close game was expected.
GSB were the first to break the deadlock after 13 minutes when a corner from James ‘Planty’ Plant found Billy ‘Howser’ Housden. He crossed the ball where it fell to Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman. Chappers took a player on and then fired the ball past the keeper.
With 5 minutes left of the first half, Edwalton launched an attacked and as the ball bounced up in the area, Malachi ‘Ky’ Gregg tried to control the ball but he just stuck an arm out to give Edwalton a penalty. The Edwalton player tucked the ball away confidently to make the scores level at 1-1.
Just before the half time whistle, Chappers got the ball just inside the Edwalton half. He carried it forward beating 3 players on his way and fired the ball into the goal to give GSB a narrow half time lead.

The second half saw Edwalton pull another goal back when GSB had a shot from a corner which was blocked and then from the resulting counter attack the Edwalton striker finished very well.
GSB once again took the lead after some good play in midfield by Haydn ‘H’ McCaughey saw the ball fall to Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman who swivelled and found the back of the net with his shot.
However Edwalton once again broke forward and the GSB defence were once again undone by a long through ball which was once again finished very well by Edwalton.
With 6 minutes left, James ‘Abbs’ Abbott had another run down the left wing and was fouled. He got up and took the free kick which was a yard in from the touch line and level with the penalty area. He strode forwards and delivered a very high ball towards the far post. The ball sailed over the keepers head and struck the far post. It then nestled into the back of the net to give GSB a 4-3 lead.
The remaining 6 minutes once again saw both sides have chances to score more goals but it was not to be for either side.

Man of the Match: James ‘Abbs’ Abbott. James scored an excellent goal to win the game for GSB and once again showed some lovely touches with his mazy runs down the wings.
With 3 more league games to play, GSB are now level on points with Long Eaton and Bingham at the top of the league. A friendly away at Division 3 Priory Celtic next week is followed by a cup game against Division 6 Toton Tigers White on the 2nd November. Then the next league game is on November 9th against Bingham Town. This promises to be another close game and one that could go a long way to deciding who gains promotion to Division 3.
