Saturday the 13th of December gave us a home game against Greenwood Meadows and the boys knew that they had beat the wanderers 6-2 only a few weeks ago so I had to stop them thinking like that and tell them today is what count’s.
The pitch was still frozen so kick off was put back, even then the ground was still hard but the game kicked off
The boys looked good for the first ten minutes, they were using the right wing of the pitch and putting Greenwood under pressure. The tackles got a lot better this week also, back to how I remember them and even the 50/50 tackles were going our way.
On the first shot Greenwood had they scored, a low driven shot from ten or so yards out went though a bunch of players skipped along the hard ground and found the left hand corner of the goal.
The boys responded well and within five minutes we pulled it back to 1-1. A great link up passing move from Ben, Max and Luca gave Luca a chance to shoot from just inside the box and he put it under the keeper with a side footed shot.
Just before half time we failed to get a hold of the ball from a corner kick and Greenwood took the lead again.
2-1 half time.
The boys knew this game was still for winning and the second half saw us take control of the game with Ben, Max, Alfie and Josh all finding space and time to shoot at the Greenwood goal. The pressure paid off for us with just five minutes left to play. A great ball from Tom playing at the back for us to Ronnie in the box saw him control the ball well, turn and put the ball past the keeper making it 2-2.
The second half was a good show of how strong the squad is becoming with Tom and Sam at the back and Luca up front. Just when I was thinking we had got a well deserved draw in the second minute of injury time Greenwood got a corner and when the ball went to the back post Max who had had a great game put the ball into his own net.
The game finished 3-2 to Greenwood Meadows and I was gutted fir the boys who had worked so hard as a team.
Next week we play our last game against Southbank wanderers and the boys know its never easy playing them but I’m sure if they put in the work rate they did today they might just get a nice early Christmas present.
