Todays game saw us on our travels for the first time this season to play Wilford Lions. Last season the lions beat us 4-0 and was the only team to stop us scoring.
I always tell the boys we take one game at a time but the boys knew before we started that this was the team who inflected our biggest defeat on us last season so it took very little to get them ready for this game.
With Tom and Ben both dropped to the bench it gave the summer signing Sam a chance to start up front. The game started at a very fast tempo with a good chance falling to the lions within two minutes but they put it over the bar. Sam was working hard in the middle of the park and when a ball from Max gave Sam a chance to run at the defenders he had Ronnie and Luca in space to the left and right, a perfect timed pass to Luca gave him a chance for a shot at goal and he didn’t waste the chance and fired us a goal up on the 8th minute mark.
It was a carbon copy of the first goal four minutes later with Ronnie given the chance and the power of the shot was to much for the keeper who could only palm the ball into the net 2-0 GSB. It was very nice to hear two of the lions parents talking about how good our passing and moving off the ball was. Good passing made both goals possible.
The second goal knocked the stuffing out of the lions and we should of put a couple more away before half time with Ben and Josh putting shots wide. Half time 2-0
I don’t know what the lions manager said to his players at half time because the home team came out a different side. For the first ten minutes we didn’t come out our half with the lions hitting the post, forcing two saves from Ashton and having a number of corners but Liam, Corey and Max did enough to stop the goal from coming.
I told the boys at half time the next goal would change the game and it came GSB way with Tom sending Ben away with a one on one with the keeper and Ben took the gift, 3-0
In the last five minutes it was end to end with Max smashing the cross bar, Luca putting in a last man tackle and Tom finding himself in the box with time to take a shot and see it deflected into net making it 4-0.
With the last attack and kick off the game it saw the lions break away from one of our corner kicks and score. It finished 4-1. I would of liked to keep the clean sheet but that could not take away the fact that we had put in yet another great team performance.
Ronnie was given man of the match and we had won three in a row. The team have made a great start to the season and Im already looking forward to next Saturday.
Well done Gedling Southbank Utd
