CALVERTON MINERS WELFARE U11 RED v GEDLING SOUTHBANK U11

Saturday 8th March saw GSB U11’s travel to Calverton for the second time in 5 games with the last meeting between these two ending up in a 4-2 victory for Calverton in the cup.

The game started with GSB kicking with the wind but they struggled to come to terms with the conditions. Calverton started where they left off in the previous game being much quicker to the ball and trying to create more with the ball but the ever improving defence of GSB kept them at bay.

The usual 4 substitutions after 15 minutes saw GSB start to get a foot in the game. Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman starting to hold the ball up well up front and Jacob ‘JB’ Burley playing just behind him and the boys starting to use the wide players to great effect.

However the first half ended goal less in which GSB had created 11 shooting opportunities against 4 for Calverton and 10 corners against Calverton’s 2. This is typical of GSB of late, creating many chances but not taking them.

The second half started very well for GSB and after 90 seconds they had taken the lead. Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman was having a go in the holding midfield role and he played a great through ball to Pates, who battled his way through past one defender and just as he was blocked Billy ‘Bowser’ Housden applied the finishing touch.

8 minutes later and GSB had doubled the lead when the same trio combined again. This time Chappers played the ball to Pates, who held the ball up well and as he went to turn Bowser stepped up and curled the ball towards the top corner and despite the keeper managing to get a hand to it, the ball sailed in to the top corner.

After another 3 minutes, GSB got a 3rd when again Pates was put through and his effort curled over the keeper, hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced down onto the line and out but James ‘Planty’ Plant, our smallest player, leapt into the air to HEAD the ball home.

Once again GSB continued to press and created numerous chances but failed to add to their lead. Calverton continued to press but as GSB had done in the first half struggled with the wind as the ball carried through to McKensie ‘Macca Pacca’ Withers in goal numerous times.

Man of the Match: Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman. His touch and lay offs today were excellent and he assisted all 3 goals and deserved to score one himself.

This victory pushes GSB up to 3rd in the league with Bramcote visiting CLW next week where we aim to complete a game that had to be abandonded last month at half time with the score at 0-0 due to the hail storm.
