Saturday 21st February saw GSB U12 boys travel to Highfields to take on Wollaton Canaries. The teams met in the league just before Xmas with GSB winning 3-1.
Due to half term holidays and injuries, GSB were down to 11 players instead of the usual 14, which meant more game time for players as well as a few players playing in different positions.
The first half saw very few chances for either side with both defences coming out on top when ever it looked like chances were going to come to the attackers. GSB tried to find a way through but could not find the vital pass in the final third.
Wollaton looked dangerous at corners with a few big players heading the ball well but always just off target.

The second half started very much in the same vein and with 10 minutes gone, Wollaton did manage to find the back of the net, albeit in rather fortunate circumstances. They had a shot from just inside the area and McKensie Withers called ‘keepers’ but Kieran Parrott had already gone to clear the ball but it unfortunately sliced off his boot and into the back of the net.
This did seem to put a little life in to some of the GSB players and with 4 minutes left they managed to get level. James Plant kept the ball in on the right and played it into Haydn McCaughey in the middle of the pitch. Haydn spotted the run of Drew Chapman down the left and played the ball in between the defenders perfectly and after a touch Drew passed the ball into the far corner of the net.
GSB continued to push forward but at times were holding onto the ball for too long and were outnumbered by Wollatons defence.

So after 3 games of the new season, GSB now have 4 points after beating Carlton Town 3-2 but losing to newly promoted Edwalton 4-1.
Man of the Match: Haydn McCaughey. Haydn is working hard to improve each game and had a great battle with Wollaton’s number 11 in midfield, who is a very good player. The pass for the goal was excellent and something I am sure he will build on in the future. Well Done H.
Next week sees the boys play host to Arnold Town at Sherwood Academy kicking off at 10:30am.
