Saturday 6th September saw GSB U12 Boys travel to Dunkirk to take on the newly formed Dunkirk Colts Red.
GSB kicked the game off and managed to take the lead through Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman who chased a through ball and shot in from an acute angle after 10 minutes, despite Billy ‘Bills’ Housden trying to claim the goal with a goal line tap in.
Dunkirk pulled a goal back after 12 minutes with a long ball through the middle which saw their striker run in between two GSB defenders and beat the oncoming McKensie ‘Macca Pacca’ Withers in goal.
GSB restored the lead a minute later when Haydn ‘H’ McCaughey fired in a long range effort which skidded under the keeper.
Half Time: Dunkirk 1 GSB 2
GSB started the second half playing much better football than in the first but Dunkirk pulled level after a corner was only cleared to the edge of the box and after a ricochet which fell to a Dunkirk striker they were level.
GSB were quickly in front again when the ball fell to Ben ‘Mozza’ Morris inside the Dunkirk box who shot the ball in past the keeper.
GSB were now playing with more confidence and were very soon 4-2 in front. Pates chased the defenders down in the Dunkirk half and won the ball on the goal line. He quickly moved the ball out of his feet before finding the back of the net.
With 10 minutes to go GSB went 5-2 in front after the ball fell to James ‘Planty’ Plant who drilled the ball low and hard into the near corner.
Dunkirk scored with the final kick of the game from a free kick.
Final Score: Dunkirk 3 GSB 5
Man of the Match: Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman. Since playing futsal last Friday night, Pates seems to have realised that one possible way to score as a striker is to put the defenders under pressure. He did so very well today and set a good example to others as well as scoring twice to become GSB U12 all time top goal scorer, now being 2 ahead of Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman.
