When you lose your captain (possibly for the rest of the season) and your striker is unavailable, this is where other players either stay on the fringe or step up. The squad proved their capabilities by preforming very well in a very tight game, and playing without a striker is always a huge task for any team.
However, the players were asked to give their all and that’s exactly what they did. We went into a 1-0 lead after Jessie’s shot from just outside the box went into the bottom left corner of the net. We were holding our own when suddenly a mix up saw Ursula pick up a back pass and we were faced with an indirect free kick well inside the box, in fairness to the girls this is something we have not worked on, so the girls didn’t know what was going on when we instructed them to stand on the goal line. A simple pass was dispatched into the net amid our girls confusion.
We still controled the game and Courtney scored directly from a free kick to put us 2-1 up at the break.
We were dominating the game up until 15 minutes to go when Calverton scored a very good equaliser to make it 2-2, this gave our opposition a real lift and we were on the back foot.
A freak shot from the far touchline outside the box somehow looped over Ursula’s head and into the net to make it 2-3
Although we went close with one effort and a few corners, we didn’t cause enough problems for our opposite keeper and they held on for a 3-2 victory in a very entertaining game.
The main thing is the game was the winner and all the players did their best in the game and this proves we are on the right track,
