GEDLING SOUTHBANK U10 RED v SHERWOOD BLUE U10 BLUE
Saturday morning saw the U10 Red team start their second half of the season, again in Division 4. The game was against Sherwood Blue, against whom the 2 previous games had both ended in draws.
Unfortunately the Red team had two late drop outs due to illness but with a new player registered, Jake ‘I need a nickname’ Burley, this meant we had 9 players.
This was the first time the team had played since December 1st and in the beginning it showed a little. However GSB improved as the first half went on and they did manage to start creating some very good chances but were just a little off the pace. There were chances at both ends and at half time it was no surprise that the teams were level but a little surprise that it was goalless.
GSB started very well in the second half and managed to get themselves ahead within the 1st minute. Some good play in the middle by Haydn ‘Corky’ McCaughey saw the ball played out wide to Ben ‘Mozza’ Morris. He crossed the ball in well and unfortunately for the Sherwood defender the ball hit him and went into the goal. A little fortunate for GSB but they deserved a little luck.
GSB were trying out some new formations in readiness for 9-a-side next season which meant Drew ‘Chappers’ Chapman and Billy ‘The Salmon’ Housden were paired as a central midfield duo for the start of the second half. They were going to try and defend a little more than usual as we only had one defender and Billy hung back a little from a corner. He managed to get the ball on the edge of the box and hit a high looping shot towards goal, which eventually saw GSB take a 2-0 lead.
A change in formation half way through the half saw GSB move to 3 defenders and Malachi ‘Ky’ Gregg showed some outstanding defending in the middle to time and again thwart any Sherwood attack.
Sherwood did manage to pull a goal back with 5 minutes to go. They got free down the left hand side and crossed the ball. Very much like the GSB opener the ball hit a defender and went in the goal.
GSB continued to play their football and with virtually the last kick of the game Drew picked up a rebound from a Carter ‘Pates’ Pateman shot and skipped past a defender before striking the ball towards goal and after a little hit of the post the ball rolled over the line to give GSB a 3-1 win.
Man of the Match: For keeping to his new central defending role and making some excellent blocks and tackles, it goes to Malachi Gregg.
