Saturday the 8th of November saw us at home to start the winter league against Keyworth Utd Green, a team who we haven’t come across untill today.
With the amount of rain over night and on match day it wasn’t going to be long before the pitch looked like a scene from the battle of the Somme, very fitting with it being remembrance weekend for all the fallen Heroes.
Keyworth started the game one player short so Ethan volunteered to help Keyworth out and play for them, great sportsmanship shown by such a young man. Well done Ethan
The game kicked off and like Keyworth we found it hard to play any sort of passing football with the pitch being heavy and muddy but we looked in control giving Keyworth very little time on the ball. We started to put the odd pass together that gave Ben, Max and Josh a chance to put a shot on goal but the Keyworth keeper was up to the challenge. A number of corners were won but we could not get that break.
In a minute of madness we let the keyworth strike break through and with his first bit of action Ashton came racing out and saved the shot putting it wide of the post. Only a couple of minutes later Tom found Luca who put a great ball through to Sam and he made no mistakes and put the ball past the keyworth Keeper. 1-0 GSB Half Time.
We talked about the gaps in midfield at half time and how important it was to get back when we didn’t have the ball.
The second half started in the same vain as the first half finished with us on top of the play and just when I was starting to think about getting that second goal a very rare mistake from Max gave the Keyworth strike a chance to run into our box and from a tight angle and Max along side him he put the ball to the far corner and scored against the run of play 1-1 with ten minutes remaining.
One thing I know about my team is they never give up and they responded well with Ronnie and Ethan both forcing saves from the Keyworth keeper. In yet another attacking move Tom passed to Ben and his shot went under the driving keeper to give us a 2-1 lead with three minutes left.
Keyworth had one more great chance to equal the game but put the ball wide from six yards out giving us a well deserved win and a good start to the winter league.
Ethan was voted man of the match for great sportsmanship and never giving in for us in the second half.
After no wins in the past three weeks it was nice to get a boost the boys needed today.
Well done Gedling Southbank Utd.
